SALT AS AN ANTIDOTE TO CHOLERA.

A correspondent of the Friend oflndia thus recommends salt as an antidote to cholera:— "I have invariably found thatthemueh eater of salt in food has generally escaped altogether, and those who have increased their daily consumption have had it in a mitigated form. I am myself a living example, for I hare met the dread diseart^ in its most virulent form in Spain, Pottu*"" gal, England, Turkey, and in this country, and have stood amidst the dying and the dead both in camp and hospital without (by God's blessing) ever having felt a touch of it. I have always, when I could obtain it, caused an extra quantity of salt to be given to those under my care, when* ever there was a chance of its approach; and I recommended eveiy one to increase the usual portion at meal times; and that an extra ration should be issued to the troops. Surely, even in these times of cheese-paring economy, the expense cannot be considered with, the value of one single life saved by the experiment. Ido not recommend salt meat, but salt pure and simple to be eaten, with the food at meal times as much as possible, but never in sufficient quantity to create thirst, until the palate, becomes accustomed to it. This is a preventative, not a cure. lam not learned enough to say in what manner salt assists the human system against this terrible epidemic, but only mention the fact, and I hope your contemporaries will 'please copy' this*" .
