James Renshaw. 1 Thames, December 6,1875. 1503 TO THE BUEGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF THAMES. /GENTLEMEN,—I am a Candidate fo> ' the honor of being elected to the office of MAYOR of our Borough at the next Election. ' . J. E. MACDONALD. 4th December, 1875.
TO THE BUKGESSES OF THE BOROUGH OF THAMES. p ENTLEMEN, — I beg respectfully to announce myself as a CANDIDATE for re-election to the Office of Mayor at the forthcoming Election. 1486 W. DAVIES. i TO THE ELECTORS OF THE DISTRICT OF THE THAMES. GENTLEMEN,— I intend to seek your suffrages at the forthcoming Election of Members of the General Assembly. I shall take an early opportunity of addressing you on the various political questions now occupying public attention, and believe my views will accord with those of the great majority of this community. I am, Gentlemen, Yours obediently,. W. Eowe. i Grahamatown, 24th November, 1875. , ' ■ " 1445 TO THE ELECTORS OF THE THAMES. pj ENTLEMEN,—In announcing my\JT self as a Candidate for your suffrages, I do so under the impression that you will affirm the principle of payment of Members, and that the exploded idea that a man cannot honestly advocate your interests without money is altogether beneath notice. For my part I consider that the majority of the population, the workers, or those that toil for their daily bread, will never be adequately represented till they bring their labor representative face to face with the monied autocrat, and so confront him in his stronghold, the Senate, upon equal terms, to do which you must honorably maintain him as a check against needy and unscrupulous politicians. Any man, therefore, who has the hardihood to step out of the ordinary channel of established' conventionalisms, and tread on the toes of usurped privileges of property will naturally be assailed on all sides by those whose interests are threatened. His antecedents will be gone into, his oocupa* tion, trade, and social position scanned to find a point to stab and exterminate him, lest a Rienzi should arise to champion the People's cause. Thames electors, be up and doing; show to the Colony that you will not be hoodwinked for another term ' of years, and do not give your vote to any. man who will not abolish all laws that j press unduly upon the energies' of the I people. " The voice of the people is the Toice of God." With regard to my principles I may say that lam a thorough Abolitionist; I would abolish the Provinces and the Upper House with them. In conclusion, working men and fellowelectprs, should my views coincide with yours, by recording me your votes you will secure the services of one who will consistently and honestly advocate your rights. I am, Thames Electors, Yours faithfully, S. Stephen'son. .Marine. Family Hotel, . ' '.' Grahamstown, November 29, 1875. 1506; "'. ■ ',-■'..,
