AUCKLAND NOTES.
FBOM QVB. SPECIAL CORBESPONDENT,
Auckland, Thursday.
The Appeal Court'
The judgment of the Appeal Court in W the Hawke's Bay lands will be a Napier bombshell for McLean, Ormond and the other members of the land ring. The virtuous indignation of both Messrs McLean and Ormond during the last session as to their honest Native dealings will now be properly appreciated. The Union Bank, New Zealand Loan Association and the Australian Investment Society are likely to be effected by these judgments. The decision will compel Government men and their supporters to be more careful in future of Native land nogociation; whilst the result must tend to bipg the Napier gentlemen into much uneswed prominence and considerably help tdtffeds pitching some ot the coming Government candidates- into the shade during the elections, now about taking place. Private Napier telegrams state that the Appeal Court judgment makes many of the big wigs there look very "pouri" indeed. The interested Natives, it is stated, are overjoyed at the. impartiality cf the higher Court in giving them their proportionate control in the leasing and disposal of their several interests in the various blocks of land. The Thames Constituency. '. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary Mr Mackay isalmost certain to stand for your district. Now that Sir George Grey is, not to be a candidate the knowing ones are begining to ask what next move Horton will start to work for Stafford. If Auckland persons who are the holders of miners' rights and other qualifications' take, an interest in the election their totes will considerably help whatever candidate they go in for. At present I look upon Billy Rowe as one of Mr Whitaker's tail. Mr Gibbons, of course.will. be helped to a " point," and! then allegiance transferred. I can only say, "God help the Thames representatives," as any of. its members might as well sojourn at, the Whau for three months in each year as please their constituents while Parliament is sitting. The Herald. The policy of this journal seems to be trusting to the chapter of accidents as to how the cat jumps in the way of a majority of representatives being likely to get returned 3 pledged either way. For myself Hook'upon the present sub-editor, Mr Berry, as one of tho3e " cunning oily fellows " whose writings are to be largely guided in an important crisis like the present by anticipations of favours to come. The Advertiser must have "something in view " when one of its proprietors slates both Mr Rowe and Mr McIlhorie in such strong language as that contained in the telegram sent to the Auckland Star on Tuesday last. lEr O'Rorke. The address of Mr O'Rorke, which appears in the Herald of this morning, is beyond doubt the best yet published. There's no holding back in his view of the policy to be adopted, namely, that of Separation and supporting Sir George Grey in constitutional questions and changes. Mx -Reyaolds. The. reception of this minister at Duncdin is anything but pleasant to the unity of the colony supporters ; fancy a vote of regret that Mr .Reynolds voted for the Abolition Bill without consulting his constituents. The Mayer. Both Mr Prime and Mr Tonks are likely to stand; another is spoken of. The contest promises, to be very exciting. The election day is similar to that of the Thames. Absence of the Guiding 1 Star of the Ministry. All the Government supporters are deploring the absence of Sir Julius Vogel, and their dissatisfaction is the more general in consequence of his not being likely to arrive in time to sensibly render support to his backers.
