CHRISTCHURCH.

•V .;; ',•': ■■;* • .: ; :■ I Tuesday. '■' The City Council last night voted £300 to the widow and family of the late George Gordon, who had held the position of town clerk for 14 years. A small pack of harriers for the Christchurch Hunt Club arrived from Melbourne yesterday. They are a very fine lot. A narrow escape from fire under somewhat curious circumstances occurred last night. A man named Aarons was returning home from the theatre, and observed smoke issuing from the shop of A. W. Wright, furniture broker, near Morton's Hotel, in High street. He was assisted by Constable Wheatleigh, who burst open, the doors, when, he .found the fire in four separate places, among piled up furniture in front of the shop, and another fire in a back room. By great exertion he succeeded in extinguishing the flames before the engines got into; play. Wright said his .wife locked up the premises, and left them all safe at ;9 p.m. The stock was insured for £500 in the New Zealand office, and; £250 fin the Batavian Fire and Marine office, tho latter policy being only a few days old. The building was insured for £150 in the Transatlantic office. There was a large stock of new and second-hand goods on : the premises, considered by many to be worth considerably over £1,000. The stock was very inflammable, and the buildings in its locality are all of timber.
