OUR VOLUNTEERS.

The Thames Scottish Company fired on Saturday at the Maori range in two squads, for Mr Dey's medal and other prizes. The ranges were 200 yards (small target, and standing position), 400 yards, and 500 yards, any position; targets at two last ranges the usual size; fire shots each range but no sighting one. There was a strong gusty wind throughout the day. At three o'clock in the afternoon it rained heavily, several times obscuring the targets. Some of the competitors left when the weather set in so bad, but the firing was gone on with by those who elected to stay. Not withstanding the rain the medal was won by Volunteer James Graham with a fine score of 52 points. We observed Mr Graham's name pretty* well up on the prize list last year, and his shooting on Saturday proves that he is keeping up his practice, and shaping for one of the district cracks. We understand that he can not only shoot well, but is an excellent volunteer in other respects, and a good attendant at drill. The prize winners were —

"Volunteer Graham ... 52 points „ McLean ... 45 „ „ Heron ... 43 „ „ Gale ... ... 41 „ Corporal Burns ... ... 38 „ The range prizes were won by—Richards (200 yards), 18 points; Graham (400 yards), 18 points; and Graham (500 yards), 17 points. The prizes were presented at the parade in the evening by Major Cooper. Staff Sergeant Clery had charge of the squads.

The Thames Naval Brigade fired their first match with the new rifles for Mr McLaren's medal^on Saturday. The weather which at 3 p.m. became very stormy spoilt ihe shooting in the afternoon. The following is the score :■— Morning Squad.—Petty officer Gordon, 52 points ; Seaman Jamison, 51; Seaman John Clarke, 49 ; Seaman W. Fagg, 49 ; Seaman S. Robinson, 48; Bandsman Henderson, 47; Seaman C. Wilson, 43 ; Seaman James Gordon, 41. Afternoon Squad.—Lieutenant Bennett, 45 points ; Petty officer Newdick, 12 ; Petty officer Nightingale, 40.
