, ' Monday. Settling for the races took place this afternoon. The following amounts were paid over:— F. W. Delamain, £172; F. Humphries, £50; Lunn, £265; Redwood, £550; P. Campbell, £7.80 ;R. H. Campbell, £40 ; D. O'Brian, £5 ; R. Ray, £95; Shand, £20.

J. and R. H. Campbell held their annual sale of racing stock to-day. Only a few lots were sold. Blair Athol was knocked down to H. Goodman, of Dunedin, for 130 guineas; ! Cocksure to Harry Prince,. bookmaker, J for 250 guineas; Twitter, to A. Drake, hoo'kmqker}~for-19&— guineas-}—Hercules,-; 120 guineas; and Castilian, 60 guineas,; to Mr Mclnvoy, Blenheim. Kauri, The Chief, Cloth of Gold, Koran, The Fair Puritan colt, Ranolf, Muturini, Tommy: Dodd, and Pakeha, failed to realise the owners' reserves, and were passed in. At a sale of pure-bred cattle, sheep, and draught horse, Messrs A. Cockburn, of Wellington, Geo. Peacock, of Napier, and H. P. Peacock, Patea, were large purchasers at high figures. Mr W. H. Pillett, who is opposing Mr.; Montgomery for the Akaroa seat in the Assembly, addressed the electors on Saturday night. He said he was in favour of the abolition of provinces, but if the terms were favourable to Canterbury ho would go in for financial separation of the two islands, with a federal government at Wellington-. A vote of confidence in him was unanimously passed.
