Serious Accident at Messenger's Tribute.
The adage that accidents never come singly has been painfully verified during the past few days. To-day haVaddM | two items t© the list of casualties. The first was an accident which ; happened to a man named Frederick Lyston, who was employed in Messenger's tribute and was today on. work there. He tells us that while at work he had occasion to fetch a hand-saw which was lying at the other side of the winze. Unfortunately he was in the dark, or nearly so, owing to the smoke occasioned by 'blasting which was being carried on down below, and did not think he was so near the mouth of the winze until he had actually fallen through to a distance of 56 feet! The wonder is that he was not killed outright. His thigh was broken, not far below the hip joint, his shoulder dislocated, his head much cut about, and his body much bruised aud shaken. This happened between eleven and twelve o'clock; he was immediately takett to the hospital, where. he was attended by Dr Fox, and his thigh set, and the dislocation reduced.
