POLITICAL GOSSIP.
Under this head we stated.last Thursday that we had heard it rumored that it was doubtful whether Mr Sheehan would contest Eodney again. We now hear that it is certain he will do so, opposed by Mr H. W. Farnall, a former member for the same place. Mr Williams, at present the representative of the Bay of Islands, will be opposed, it is rumored, by Mr Lundon, and Mr IT. H. Lusk will contend in the strength of Sir George Grey against Mr Munro for the membership of Marsden. The old opponent?,' •T. S. Macfarlane and the twice elected Yon der Heyde, will, it is said, try conclusions for the third time in the tV>itemata district, and Dr. Lee, it is reported, will make an attempt to step in as a third party while the other two fight over the seat. Sir Julius Vogel, ifc is said, will not contest City East again, having been—or being about to be—re* quisitionised to stand for Wanganui, so says a telegram, which also informs us Dr Buller has given up all intention of contesting the seat. If this be true it leaves City East for the present to Mr Clnrk. and MrEees. Prom Palmers toS^cam^ the news that Messrs Gisborne, Walter John.stone, Halcombe, Buller arid Major Mcßarnett intend contesting Manawafu. Mr Buckland spoken of as a candidate for the Thames, is consigned by rumour to a self-imposed absence from the Assembly, it being reported that he does not again intend to seek election. Mr May is. mentioned for Franklin, also Messrs E. Hamlin and Woodward. Mr Swanson will be unopposed, we hear, for Newton, Sir' George Grey and Mr Dignan for City West; but it is impossible to say whether the electors for Gjty West will have a contest or not until Sir George has made up his mind" which constituency he will stand for.- Mr Header Wood is to be opposed for Parnell on dit by Mr Dargaville. For the East Coast Mr Kelly, Mr Morris and Oolonel Hanngton are spoken of; and for the Thames rumour, is -busy with the names of Messrs Mackay, Carpenter and Howe; rumour however cannot know much on this subject as yet, as nothing definite has been settled. • ••' .: ,
