A CURIOSITY.

(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)

Sib,—While walking along the beach between G-rahamstowriand Shortland, yesterday, I noticed a bottl? lying on. the sand near the receding tide, securely corked and sealed, and not being a Good Templar, I was naturally in a hurry to get at the contents of it. Quick as thought, I picked up a stone and knocked the neck off, when, to my disappointment, not a drop of anything wet escaped. I was about to throw it down in disgust, when I saw the edge of a piece of notepaper poking out, which J extracted and i read, and as ife seems to me to be a strange \ document, and appears to have found its way from Auckland, I thought it would be interesting to the Thames people, and so forward it for publication. The following is a copy of it :— "Auckland, October 29, 1875.—1t is reported here that a certain class of the people on. the Thames are preparing a a boat for the purpose of taking a roxo to the Harbour of Debate, and it is very probable that on the voyage they will fall in with another vessel laden with carrots,, parsnips, and the like, bound for the same place of resort, where there is wind only for about three months in the, year, but very squally. The latter vessel has been cruising about in fresh water for some time, evidently preparing. Should they i meet, a race is certain to take place, which the former is backed to win at great odds. Scientkb." As there seems to be some sort of a mystery connected with the above, you may help to clear it up by publishing it.—lam, &c, ■.'■"■' Lucky.
