POLITICAL GOSSIP.

As there seems to be a probability of a dissolution at an ea^ly date, and as rumour is busy with the names of public and private men in connection with politics we propose to devote a small space in our daily issue to noting the changes on the political chess board as signified by Dame Humour. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the correctnes of the rumours, which must be taken cum, grano salts. Readers may, however, remember that where there is smoke there is fire.

Amongst the names mentioned as likely to contest this constituency is that of Warden Fraser.

It is currently reported that a requisition to Sir George Grey to stand for the Thames is awaiting his return to Auckland, und that it is probable he will accept the same, as the return of a Provincialist for City West is pretty certain, and the acceptance by Sir George Grey of the Thames constituency will secure one otherwise doubtful seat.

Mr F. Whitaker having declined to stand for the Thames, it is stated that Mr A. Brodie has been asked to put himself in the position of candidate, but has declined.

The Licensed Victuallers of the Thames are reported to be in favor of the candidature of Mr Wm. Carpenter for one of the seats for the Thames.

Mr William Rowe, it is said, will receive a large and influential requisition in a few days, backed by the whole influence of the Dunedin Tablet.
