Waitekauri.

(fbom a cobbespondeht.)

Saturday.

A meeting has been convened for this afternoon to see if something cannot be done to rouse the Government to take action in the matter of making a road from the Paeroa to this place, and also to get up a petition for a post office, which is greatly needed. There are about a hundred men working up here, besides others out prospecting.

The men in the Welcome claim have cut one reef, which is five feet thick, and they have a first-class show, as nearly every stone broken out shows gold. They are pushing their drive in as it is thought there is another goldbearing reef about 15 feet ahead, which has been cut on the surface. The claim No. 1 South of the Welcome cut the same reef in a hole close to their boundary, from which they got a good prospect. They have knocked off work in one of their drives, having come across a hard bar of country, and started another. Two or three more claims have been taken up on the line of reef to the south, but no find reported at present. Clark and party, od the north of the Welcome, are hard at work trenching and sinking holes for the reef, which they expect to get in a day or two, as their boundary is not more than 200 feet from where the reef has been cut in the Welcome. The Nova Scotians have not come into where they got the gold yet as they are going through a very hard bar of country which requires shooting. There is no news from the adjoining claims of any importance. There was a rumour on the hill that the claim north of the Nova Scotian's had cut a small leader carrying gold, but I hadn't time to go round to inquire into the matter.
