A valedictory banquet was given to Mr William Berry on night by the Proprietors of the Thames Advertiser, the Staff and Companionship of that journal, and a number of citizens, including the Resident Magistrate and Warden, Captain Fraser; Mining Inspector—Captain Goldsmith ; the resident Government engineers Messrs. A. Aitken and J. M. McLaren ; J. Brown and W. Carpenter, M.P.C.'s; J." Wilson, L. Ehrenfried and J. Gibbons, Borough Councillors; Inspector Bullen, Messrs T. L. Murray, J. D. Grant, E. W. Hollis, J. E. Macdonald, R. Workman, G. T. Wilkinson, P. W. Donnelly, J. Stewart, and others. The banquet was given on the occasion of Mr Berry's leaving the Thames, and severing his con' nection with the Advertiser (with which journal he has been associated for seven years) to assume the editorship of the New Zealand Herald. The chair was occupied by Mr W. Wilkinson and the vice-chair by Mr A. G. Horton. A number of toasts were drank, including that of the " Guest of the evening," proposed in complimentary terms by Mr Wilkinson, and responded to by Mr Berry. A presentation was made to Mr Berry by the companionship of the Advertiser, consisting of a late edition of " Chambers' Encyclopedia of General Knowledge." The proceedings, we gather from the Thames Advertiser, were of a very pleasant character, and all united in wishing Mr Berry good luck in his new sphere of duty, in which we cordially join.
