THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Borough Couni'il was held yesterday evening in the i ouncil Chambers. Present: Crs Kenshavr, Moonab, Gibbons, Wilson, Ehrenfried and Butt- . In the absence of the Mayor Gr Renshaw was called upon to take the chair. ' MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. APPEALS Aft»INBT ASSESSMENT. ->" X It having been resolved to he»r appeals against the assessed rates at this in- etiue the appeals were proceeded with, the standing orders of'the Council being suspended during the time they were heard. Walter Ericker objected to being rated as William Fricker, such not being his name. The alteration at name ordered to be made.

Michael Hogan, Fountain Hotel, appealed against the valuation of his premises being fixed at £40, the real value being £20. Tbe appeal was made on the ground that the house half the year v. as surrounded by water, and cf no real value to.him during that time. Valuation reduced to £30.

John Foss, valuation £50 objected to. Objection not sustain- d. there being both a dwellin.:-house and business premises. —— Bierstoff, valuation £20, ol.jeced to. Reduced to £15,

John F©ss also objected to thevaluation of a house in Baillie street valued at £25. Reduced to £20.

William H«therington objected to of a house in Mary street taken over by Mr Hudson. Mr Hudson agreed to take the rates over, but objected to the amount, £40. Reduced to £35.

R. Burra, as agent for Mr De Hirsch. objected to valuation of reduction works in Owen street. Valuation £ 100. Reduced to £75.

Cecil MoMahon, a small cottage on the Beach, rated at £26. Reduced to £20.

Bernard Wolffe, property in Tararu Road. Objection not sustained, Mr Wolffe not being present. Edwin Biriney, valuation £100, and office £25. < bjection not sustained.

Jamos Miller, valuation £45 and £15 for shop. Objection not sustained. J. B. Steadman, Tararu Mine and bat tery, valuation £440. Matter to stand over for enquiry. James Kowe, property at Moanatairi Creek, £15; n appeal made by mistake as the property was only rated at £10. James Patterson, valuation £46, shop on beach near Kuranui Hotel. .Reduced to £40. ■.-. W. B. Williams, shop in Pollen street, valuation £30. Objection not sustained. Alexander Kennedy, valuation £48. Not sustained.

B. SJceen, valuation £8. Not sustained. A. Somerville. No appearance. J. Heron, objections against allotments being raised in value this year, i Not en tertained except one objection where an error had been made in the name. French & Co., valuation £60. Not sustained. Mr Hyams of the firm of Barnett and Levy stated he had been absent from the Thames, and so had been unable to send in the proper notice of objection in writing. He objected to a rating of £75 After some 'discussion this matter was adjourned until the next meeting H ugh Farrell, £10 valuation. Reduced to £8.

This concluded the list of appeals, the usual business was then proceeded with. APPLICATIONS FOB BUILDING SITE. An application was made by John Sawyer and! Co , for a piece of land 200 feet by 200 for-a building site, opposite the Kuranui battery. Referred to the Works Committee to report to tbe next meeting. A similar application for land, 200 feet by 300 was read from John Fleming, also referred to Works Committee. EEFU3AL TO CONTINUE CONTEACT. A letter was read from Mr Kennedy stating he could not perform his contract for^rembving refuse at 30s a wetik, and [ asking for 37s 6d a week to *nable him to do so. Resolved that Mr Kennedy's deposit (£2) be forfeited, and if he refuse to [ continue the contract, that it be re-let. ALTERATION OF NAMES. ! Cr Ehrenfried slated that he had gone through the rate-book and found there the names of several persons as rated who had left the district. Resolved that if on enquiry the list of such names be found to be incorrect the Town Clerk be authorised, to alter them. APPLICATION FOB WATEE-PIPSS. An application for pipes to be laid on to their Louses in Mary street was mado from Lamb Brothers. ; Referred to Water Committee. A similar application was made by John Conx*oy and similarly dealt with. WATEE AT PABAWAI CCAKBEKS. ' A letter was read from Mr Brassey oh behalf of Mr Spencer requesting that immediate attention be given to .his request that water be laid on to the Parawai;Gardens. ,

Referred to the Water Committee to prepare a statement and report.

BEPOBT OF CESIETKBY COMMIT EE

The report was as follows:—"Your committee have the honour to report that they met on the 25th instant, to arrange for raising money to make, tup road outside and the footpath insMe the present, cemetery at Shortland, in accordance with the request conveyed to them from the Council of tho Borough of Thames ; and after due consideratipn as to <he best and most easy means of raisins money for this purpose, the committee recommend to the Council that in order to cover the expehditure already incurred in connection with Wilson's paddocks, and to provide funds for tho making of a road from Cooper's bridge to the entrance to the pres nt cemetery, according to pan ani estimate prepared by Mr McFarland, that a sum of £300 be raised by mortgage over Wilson's paddocks, and that all that portion of the land now unlet be at once let by tender, and the rentals so obtained, together with that payable by Mr Adams, be applied in liquidation of the mortgage. The committee also suggest that the Town Clerk be authorised by the Council to call by advertisement for tenders from persons wishing to rent the paddocks.— John Butt, Chairman." It was. resolved in the absence of the Mayor to allow the matter to stand ovor until the next meeting.

ACCOUNTS. Tho accounts and pay sheet amounting ,o £39 15? dd were passed for payment.
