October 25. The latest and^bcfsi news from this district is, that reef has been out in the Welcome claim, on Saturday night, atj,^ depth of-about 10 feet, and the first few pieces of stone, broken out, showed gold plainly. The reef has been cut into about 2| feet to-day, and the stone, wherever it is tried with pestle and mortar, gives good prospects. There has been a claim of ten men's ground taken up on the southern boundary .©tithe arid registered as the Fergus. The shareholders are busy putting in two tunnels from opposite sides of the spur, and expect to cut the reef in one or the other, in tho course of a week or tWO. The ground on the northern side of the Welcome has been taken up by Clark and party, but they have not registered 'or dtone any work yet, but make a fair "start to-morrow. There is; nothing new from the .Nova'Scotian rush. All the shareholders in'the different clairas^are working, driving, and trenching. Ha fish 'up the reef. The Bank of England claim, on the Leahy line of reef, arenntora^tfery hard bar, and making slow''progress. The Golden Horn men made a .fresh start at the end of last week,, and are working on a leader which carrier* a little gold. I saw ft nice piece of golden "stone in "the possesion of T. Shaw (of. Block 27, notoriety) the other day, "but couldn't get any information as t6 where it came from. Diggers are funny ! fellows. " I believe the most of . thjem. would sooner give, you the half of their last; meal than give any information about gold. •; i ■■-■■■■•;''■■-■■] j When is there going to be anything done about making a. road for bringing , mSchme'ry iip b:ere^ : There have, b en two, if not three, good payable reefs proved in this district.,iand;thereis very little show of anybody lip here making anything out of them for the want of crushing power;: ;;Mr D. Leahy :has-been out this h\st fortnight trying to find a better road than we -have at present to the Paeroa. He has, after much hardship and difficulty, found- what he considers a good road, and which could' very easi'y be made fit for a dray. Let us hope the Government will do something at once, as j there would be room for a large population up here if all the minos were in full j swing ; besides, men would have better ■ heart to go out prospering if they knew them tfas a good road for bringing machinery up if they got anything good. As it is men that huve got a'show can just ,sit down and look at it* and wish they bad the same show in some other j country where the. Government was not j afraid to speculate a few pounds in road- j making to new districts. j
