Waitekauri.

(fbom a cokkespondekt.)

October 18.

Mining.

There was a great deal of excitement here last week about the reported find of rich gold in the Nova Scotian claim, which was registered last Monday as the Young Colonial. One gentleman caused some surprise to the shareholders and

others on Wednesday, when it became known that he had applied for shares in the T oung Colonial on the plea that they were not manned.' It was thought to bo rather sharp practice, but still if men have as good a show as the Nora Sootians are supposed to have, they ought to look out and man. their • ground at once. The shareholders in the above claim are very close cards, and there is very little information to be" got. They have pegged out 10 men's ground on the east boundary of the Waitekauri Company's ground. Some of the Shareholders are' busy put* ting in a cutting to intersect the reef where the good gold is supposed to exist. The majority of the men up here fancy that the* work that is'l»eing done is bftly'a' blind, as it is supposed that the best gold is in another part of the claim. There have been two claims of 10 men's ground each pegged out on the north side of the Youns Colonial. The shareholders are making preparations to start work, but I think there will be but little done till there is more known about the course of the reef. - As present it is supposed to run nearly parallel with the Golden Point. There has also been 10 men's ground taken up qn, the south side, another of the same size being pegged out on the eastern boundary of the Young. Colonial. I expect the Warden will be | pretty busy next Court day with settling disputes from this part of the field. Foley and party have taken up and registered 10 men's ground about £ of amile in a southerly direction from the Waitekauri Company's ground. They have cut a large reef in two places on the surface, carrying a little gold ; and they are now putting in a tunnel to cut the reef at a depth of about 50 feet. Woods and party have taken up a piece of ground on the south side of Foley's, and are prospecting for the reef by sinking. Of the claims on the Dan Leahy line of reef the Hfcnk of England is the only one working at present, and they expect to cut the reef in the course of a fortnight or so. The protection of the Golden Horn expires this week, so lexpctthey will be in full swing again n<'Xt week. [The above letter has been just a week in reaching us.—Ed]
