Thames Water Supply.

The contract taken by Mr Fougby in April last for extending the Thames Water Supply scheme from the termination of Smith Brothers' contract near the Bob Roy, Parawai, to the reserToir above the City of York shaft, Waio-Karaka, has been pushed forward, and considering the winter season during which the work has been performed, is nearer completion than could hare been expected. The length of the contract is one mile three-quarters, in the course of which there are 1700 feet open ditching, 600 feet timbered ditto, covered and open, 4000 feet fluming or iron, troughs ertcted on trestles varying in height from 1 foot to 45 feet, and 2300 feet tunnelling, fitted with sets of timber and sole pieces of the most durable wood; the longest tunnel is that from the Karaka Creek to the reservoir, necessitating sinking an air shaft. This tunnel requires some 50 feet to drive, which will complete that c'ass of work. TJiere areupwards of2o connections in the section, and the curvature of the race involves the frequent insertion of gussets, requiring judgment and. care in their adjustment. The whole of the fluming and trestle work is in position, and the workmen are now engaged in finishing up the work by forming the connections, and trimming off the earthworks- The works in this contract have been carried on under the personal oversight of Mr JFoughy, and the manner in which they have been so far accomplished, reflects well upon his ability and energy. Within a month, the section will be ready to be handed over to the Government Engineer. Provision will be made for discharging the overflowat the Karaka Creek, bringing on only such weight of water to the Waio-Karaka as may be desired. This is the last section let by the Government. No. 1 has been finished some months ago under Mr Heron's management; the second or main contract is now in hand by contractors H.N. and A. Smith.
