Saturday. Wreck of the Steamer Bruce.
I have just landed from visiting the wreck of tha steamer Bruce, which struck on a lodge of rocks between.Wickliffe Bay and Tairoa Heads at 3.40 a.m., a quarter of a mile froiri-ihe Heads. She left Timaru at 6 p.m. yesterday, and came along under easy steam. At 3.30 a.m. hove to and got soundings in 16 fathoms of water. Shortly afterwards struck stem on about six feet below the water line. The weather being extremely foggy the outline of the land was not discernible. The pas•engers were all landed on the rocks and walked to the pilot station. The ship he«k4over on her starboard broadside, frac'tftring about two feet of the bow. She now lies submerged, and should a N.Et: bree^Btsetin little hopes of saving any part of hye. can be entertained. The steamers Gcelbng and Jane are tendering her. She iis' insured for . £24,000, as follows :—National, £10,000; New Zealand, £1000; South British, £1000; Victoria, £1000; Standard £500; National of South Australia, £500; home offices, £10,000. The luggage and crew and their effects are partly recovered.
