A Dunedin contemporary says :— Among the letters in Cyrus Haley's possession at the time of his death was one written to him a few months ago by his aged mother, who resides in Camclen Town,.London. It was signed "from your affectionate mamma." The bullet bad passed through this letter, aud through all, or nearly all, of a number of photographs of relatives he'had. In the same parcel Haley had treasured up some little hits of ribbons and other mementos of his wife and family. Black as was the unfor.tu.aate man's character, there can be no doubt that a strong feature in it was love of his family, and to that feeling (misdirected) we have reason to believe some of his offences may be attributed, and it also might have been the cause of determining him to run away from gaol.
