CURE.
The return for the month (not a monthly crushing) has realised the satisfactory item of 799 ounces 7 dwts retorted gold. The Tararu battery has been employed in reducing quartz with a limited number of stampers, sometimes 20, 15, and at times even 10. This variation arises from the insufficient supply of water to drive the turbine, speaking of which it may be mentioned that within the last few days a new pair of bevel spur wheels have been supplied from Price's foundry, and work well. The wheels are respectively sft 6in and 2ft 6in. During the interval caused by replacing those j necessary appliances the mill was driven by steam power, but<is now propelled by the cheaper power of water. In the mine the prospects are very encouraging ; gold is visibly diffused^ throughout the workings, and rapid progress is making towards opening up a new block underfoot, which will afford backs from 70 to 100 feet upon four goldbearing lodes. The expenses of working have been heavy of late, but the manager, Mr Crawford, will shortly be in a position to realise with profit upon the labor invested. Towards the present month's return there is already a considerable amount of choicepicked stone confided to the company's strong box.
