This day. The House resumed at 7.30 p m. The Stamp Duties Bill was committed, and after futher amendments were made in the way of reducing the stamp duties upon small properties descending to lineal descendants, the bill was reported with amendments. In consequence of Mr Bridges, manager of the National Bank, refusing to give evidence before the Public Accounts Committee, although he made grave imputations against certain members of the House, the Treasurer moved that he be arraigned before the bar of the House on Monday next, in order that the inquiry might be continued. The motion was agreed to. The Immigration and Public Works Appropriation Bill was read a second time. The Bill shows in detail the amount the Government propose to expend during the present year, the expenditure already incurred, and the amount the Government propose to appropriate for the different services, and the way it is to be divided amongst the different public services. Agreed to. The [Representation Bill was read a second time without any discussion. Before going into committee Sir George Grey moved his resolution regarding native lands, namely—That .Native Lands Purchase Commissioners should not be allowed to purchase for any person but the Government, and that any laud pxir-
chased by them for themselves or other persons should be made the property of the state, compensation being of course allowed. The resolution was opposed by the Government, though they agreed with its principle. After some discussion the resolution was negatived by 36 against 22. Several items in the Estimates were passed without alteration, and the House [ adjourned at 12.40
