The House met at 2.30, p.m. The Government told Mr O'Neill that they intended to give effect to the :ecominendation of the Ohinemuri ?€inelrs' Eight Committee regarding the giving of £150 to Adam Porter. The House dees not agree with the Legislative Council's amendments in No. 1 Gold Gelds Act Amendment Bill. There was a long discussion upon the ' House going into committee on Mr Reid's Employment of Females Act Amendment Bill. Mrßradahaw protested strongly against the bill being proceeded with. Mr "Reid explained that he desired to amend the bill to secure one or two alternatives, namely, to word the bill so as to permit women and children to work ten hours a day in woollen or cloth factories,. or else to permit of their going to work at six o'clock in the morning, and allowing them to work as late as nine at night so as to enable the Mosgiel woollen factory to employ two shifts of seven hours each iv the 21. After a, good deal of discussion Mr Eradshaw's amendment that the bill be read six months hence was negatived by 25 to 23. Iv Committee the bill was amended so as to permit women and children going to work at six o'clock in the morning and to work not later than six at night. Fir Cracroft Wilson moved an amendment to the effect that Mr Bradshaw's Act should not apply to saleswomen and miliiners, but the term milliners was respected on the motion of Mr Bowen, and the Act was made to apply to saleswomen alone.
