THAMES GOLDFILDS HOSPITAL.
The General Committee of the abore institution held their usual monthly meeting yesterday afternoon at the Salutation Hotel. Present—Mr W. Eowe, in the chair; Messrs C. Hill, R. Comer, L. J. ' Bagnall, C. Cox, W. Sims, D. Macnab, T. W. Gudgeon, J. Prater, H. Mcllhone, W. McCullough, J. Renshaw, W. Souter, j W. Davies, J. Johns, and J. Hudson. Apologies from the Key. J. Hill and W. Wilkinson were received. The minutes of the Jast meeting being read and confirmed the following report from the V HOUSE COMMITTEE was read :—" The members of the House Committee during the past mouth have regularly met, and each time have visited the various., wards .of..the Hospital. Everything connected with the .management of the In- titution meets with the unqualified approbation of your Committee. The detached cottage. for the Warders was completed in the early part of the month ; the accounts passed and payment ordered. The large ward has been painted and whitewashed in ace rdance with specifications, and passed. The contractor is now busy with the accident ward, which will also be completed in a few days." THE TKEASUHES's EEPOBT showed that after paying the salaries and maintenance accounts due the balance in the Bank would be only £37 19s 6d. With such a small credit balance Mr Eenshaw pointed out that unless subscriptions to a large amount came in during the present month it would be necessary again to get an overdraft from the Bank to pay the ordinary expenses of the institution. During the past month £10 in donations had been received, and upon the motion of Mr Mcllhone, the secretary was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of such and to thank the donors on behalf of the committee for their liberality. subgeon's beport. The state of your hospital during Jhe month of September has been as follows : —Kemained in hospital end of August 19.; 'admitted during September. 24 ; dis-' cbarVed, 23;. died, 2;. remaining 30th September, 18 ; average daily Mck, 19J ; number of out-patients treated, 12 . There has been a very, great increase m the number of out-patients, and many persons wishing to get relief as such havf spoken to me of the difficulty of obtaining t'dkets. The number of in-patients reported above is slightly smaller than it would have been, had not the two large wards been under a process of cleaning and painting which necessitated the number of male patients being kept as low us other circumstances would permit. The stopping, painting, and whitewashing of the largest wavd has been satisfactorily completed, and will be of great advantage to the inmates. The accident ward is now in process of receiving the same renovation. I have the lionor to be, gentlemen, your obedient servant, Akexandek Fox, M.D. Shortland, October 5, 1874. Mr Davies suggested that advertisements should be inserted' in the papers asking for donations of old linen and calicr>, as it "cost the Hospital a considerable sum to buy material for bandages. . . Mr Macnab proposed Capt. Butt as a. member of the Committee. Seconded by Mr McCullough and carried. Mr Macnab drew attention to -the fact that there were two" vacancies in the list of lion, surgeons, and suggested that appointments should be- made. After some discussion it was decided to wait for the annual meeting to elect the hon. surgeons. Mr Bagnall said he had a motion to make and one which he believed would result in benefit to the funds of the Hospital. It was that the secretary should be requested to write fo each of the Friendly Societies on the Thames, asking them to take part in a demonstration for the purpose of raising funds for the Hospital. There were over 1000 members on the books of the various societies, and he believed, if all would unite — and he had reason for knowing that the idea would be supported —a great deal of money might be collected. If either .of the public gardens on the Thames were rented, and the public asked to provide prizes for sports to be held in them, a small charge for admission might be charged, which would give a good sum for the benefit of the institution. Mr Mcllhone very gladly seconded the motion of Mr Bagnall. The matter had been talked over by the delegates of the various societies at a late meeting, and, he believed, would be carried. After some remarks from other speakers, all in favor of the motion, it was put by the president, and carried. Messrs Adams and Cox were elected to the House Committee, which concluded the business.
