NAPIER.
Wednesday. A man named Ryan has been apprehended on a charge of uttering a forged cheque for £24, signed Douglas and Co. He presented it for payment of his board and lodging. ?he landlord gave him credit for the amount, and let him have £1 on account. The cheque proved to be worthless, as no such firm as Douglas and Co. was known. Ryan could not be found, but the police yesterday arrested him at Pohui. The charge of forgery could not be sustained, and the prisoner will be dealt with summarily for obtaining £l on false pretences. A handsome silver baton ha« been pr» sented to Major Withers by the Napier Musical Society. The baton is of local mamfttcture. The first spelling bee here will be held to-morrow night.
