AUCKLAND.
This day. The Supreme and Police Courts, j The Frances Dywer Case* Assault "with intent. The Supreme Court was opened to-day. The Judge commented on the fact that Maori women composed half the calendar; also on the comparatively light nature of the crimes. The young woman, Frances Dywer, pleaded guilty to larceny, and was sentenced to nine months'imprisonment. Sutcliffe, Sibbin's store lad, also pleaded guiity, and received nine months. Axam's case is proceeding. The Police Court is now occupied with a charge of assault with intent against William Kirby, coal merchant. Mrs Bain deposed that Kirby forced her on the bed, bound a counterpane round her head so that she could not scream, and nearly accomplished his purpose, when her husband, who had been in the cheffonier watching the struggle, came in and rescued her.
