A cbtjel hoax was recently perpetrated in Wellington. During the progress of the Artillery, ball a cab drove hastily to the Oddfellows' Hall, and the driver sent in word that a certain lady and a gentleman were wanted at home instantly, as their babjr was dangerously ill or dying. On receipt of the message they at once left the room and proceeded in the trap at full speed to their house, where they found the child, as it had been left, fast asleep, and perfectly well; the servant and elder sister of the child being in charge of the house. The feelings of the mother may be conceived by other mothers, but cannot be described.

In the Kesident Magistrate's Court today permission was granted to Charles Curtis, Pacific Hotel, for the extension'of his license on Monday evening next, on the occasion of the Hibernian Society's anniversary celebration at the Academy of Music.

The anniversary of the Hibernian Society will be celebrated to-morrow and on Monday. Tomorrow's proceedings will consist of a procession to Sfc Francis' Church to hear a sermon. On Monday the celebration will take the form of a soiree dansante at the Academy of Music, at which there will no doubt be a largo gathering, as similar gatherings in former years have been eminently successful.
Me Pulleine, as will be seen by those who read the Star, says that men arc so bad (which he thinks is sad), as to try his success to mar; his withdraw al's a mistake, which he begs to state, and to win he'll do what he can ; ladies' votes he'll solicit, with trust most implicit, for he is the lady's man.
We learn from a London correspondent that the only item of New Zealand news published by the Times on the arrival of the Australasian mail in London last July was that " the new mines at Ohinemuri have turned out quite a failure and that the rush of miners from the Thames all found it so."
Mb Thokntokt with his troupe and the assistance of some amateurs gives a performance of. a varied kind tonight. The programme is a full one, replete with comedy, farce, songs, dances* and the aerial suspension feat which Mr Thornton will perform in a way not previously exhibited by him at the Thames.
