DEATH OF MR WALTER WILLIAMSON.

With sincere regret we record the death of Mr Williamson, which took place at the Pacific Hotel at half-past eight this morning. The deceased gentleman was well known and respected, having for a long period been connected with the Press, and displayed considerable ability in the several vocations filled by him. For the past few years ; however* his time has been chiefly occupied in prospecting the Peninsula of Coromandel, he being one of the Pioneers of the Thames Goldfield, occasionally^ acting asrspecial correspondent to several papers both in Auckland and elsewhere. On the breakout of the diggings: at Queensland he went thither, and travelled over a great portion of the Northern Territory, and came back to New Zealand on the opening ofthe Ohinemuri district, but the news from Tairua induced him to visit the locality, where he pegged .off and established the claim next to the Prospectors', naming.the -.lease the Puketui. In travelling up and down from the Thames, and.the necessary exposure consequent upon this undertaking, his hitherto robust constitution received a shock which caused him to be laid up for a few days a fortnight since, but he determined to start on another pegging out expedition, and h#d to return to the Thames without accomplishing it. .On Saturday he was not Vail j on Sunday morning h<j J was taken with a fit, rendering him speechless, and to *11 .appearance insensible to outward objects.
