A meeting was held at Masterton on Saturday evening, on the abolition question. Mr Bunny, M.H.R., addressed the meeting. He admitted that he had always been in favor of abolition, but opposed the present bill as imperfect, maintaining that it should be submitted to the people, and decided upon at the next general election. Mr Andrew M.H.E., replied, and went for immediate abolition. There were four provincial Councillors present, of whom three favored abolition. A resolution in favor of going to the country was proposed; then an amendment recommending abolition during the present session. Thirty-seven voted for the amendment, and thirty-eight for the resolution, The chairman, who abstained from speaking, said if he had a casting vote it would be given for abolition.
