BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the
Borough,' Council ;was held last night. 'Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Ehrenfried, Wilson, Macnab Benshaw, Eowe, Butt and Brown. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and correspondence was read. WATJBB SUPPLYJETC. His Worship said that in view of the probability of the town water supply being inadequate to requirements, he had applied to the Government to have a main laid through the streets from the large ; water race. The action of the Mayor, was approved. , Cr Ehrenfried stating that complaints had been made of an increase in the rate charged for the domestic water supply, some conversation ensued as to the authority under which the increase had been made, and it was ultimately agreed that the charges should remain the same as before the management of the water supply was handed over to the Borough. In the cases which.had come under the . notice of the Mayor he had given instructions that the old rate should be reverted to, and his action was approved by the Council. COBBESPONDENCE BECEIVED. A letter was received from Mr SubInspector Bullen calling attention to a clerical error in the Municipal Corporations Act, calculated to hinder the operation of the Act in securing convictions. It wa» decided to bring the error under the notice of the Government, • with a riew to having it rectified., A letter from Mr E. M'Donald Scott, complaining of the state of the Moanatairi road, was referred to the Works Committee, as was also a letter from Mr John Hennelly complaining of a nuisance existing on an allotment adjoining his property:- . '■ . A letter was received from Mr J. A. Miller stating that in consequence of a tapu the fence of the Wesleyan Church could not be set back to enable the road to be made. The Mayor stated that after that letter was written the tapu had been removed, and arrangements were being conducted to obtain the removal of the fence. TABABTT TBAMWAY AND BOAD. Some correspondence was read with reference to the? agreement between the Provincial Government and the Tramway Company as to the maintenance of Tararti Boadi but nothing definite was elicited. BEPOBTS.
The reports of the Foreman of Works and Health Officer were received and adopted. The latter stated that measles had again broken but in the district. . . The report of the Fire Brigades Committee, recommending,, a payment of Is for every fifteen minutes' spell at the engine pump, was adopted. The report of the Water Supply Committee recommended that as the right to divert water from the creek had been questioned it would be advisable to get a Bill passed through the Assembly defining the rights. It also recommended that water pipes be laid on to the Goods and Curtis' Wharves and to Shortland Wharf. The report was adopted, and with reference to the Bill, it was decided to communicate with Mr Charles O'Neill. The report of the Works Committee was read and approved. The Bate Collector, reported, that he had collected during the mont'i £168 of general rates and £275 water rates. The report of the Finance Committee was adopted, and accounts to the amount of £242 17 6d were passed for payment. The Town Clerk reported that the kerosene stores licenses had expired, and Messrs Butt and Wilson were appointed a committee to inspect the stores. The license fee was fixed the same as last year, namely, £1 for general license and £3 for storingin-bulk. Cr Brown drew attention to the state of Tararu Boad. deferred to the Works Committee. It was decided that the Borough would take over the road and apply to the Government for £100 in aid of repairs.
