Sudden Death of a Child.

CORONER'S INQUJEST. An inquest was held this .day at the Court house, Shortland, before J. E. Macdonald, Esq., Coroner, on the body of Kate Adelaide Moore, aged two and a half month old. Curtis Moore the father of the child gave evidence to. the effect-that he and his wife with the child! which' was christened yesterday, had gone" to bed about half-past ten, the child being then perfectly well. 'He awoke about two o'clock this morning, and went to sleep again, his wife being at that time also awake, and nursing -the child/ :/M)on¥ 5 o'clock this morning his wife awoke him saying the child was dead, whereupon he immediately sent for Dr Perston. Catherine Moore, the mother of the child, corroborated the evidence of the last witness in every particular. She further stated that haying nursed the child until it fell s asleep, which was very ' soon,' ' she put it -in the bed on the opposite side to; that on which her husband slept. She awoke at 5 o'clock and found her baby dead ; the child was lying by her side not in any way under her, nor were the bed clothes over its face.

\ Dr Perston stated he was called to see I the child this morning between 5 and 6 o'clock; the child was then quite, dead. There were no marks of violence, and judging irom appearances he should say that the child had met its death from suffocation by some external means, such as the end of the blanket getting on the mouth of the child, or the child getting on its face. A verdict of accidental death from suffocation was returned.
