NEW ZEALAND RIFLEMENT AT PHILADELPHIA IN 1876.
Attention havißg been drawn to the fact that the Americans are anxious to see as many nations as possible represented at their international rifle contest of 1876, and having, moreover, expressed a wish that the Australian colonies would send competitors, Mr Lynch of New South WalesJ wrote to Mr J. W. Walker asking him to ascertain what hope there would be of New Zealand taking her share in providing a team to do battle on behalf of the Australasian colonies.
Mr Walker accordingly convened a meeting which was held yesterday evening at the Pacific Hotel. Mr Walker was called to the chair, and stated the reasons why several of those who are to the front in rifle matters were absent, and read a letter of apology from Captain Murray, regretting his unavoidable absence, and throwing out some suggestions as to the most advisabfe course to adopt. Mr Walker also read the letter he had received from Mr Lynch, and a copy of the letter he had himself sent to Captain Goldie requesting him to forward it to Melbourne.
A ll who' were present were unanimous in considering it most desirable that the Colony should be represented, and it was agreed that the following gentleman be requested to act as a committee to bring the same under the notice of Government and to use every effort to induce them to take the matter in hand:—His Worship the Mayor, Captain Fraser, Major Cooper; Captains McUoberts, Macdonald, Murray, Brassey, Hazard and Taipari,- with Messrs Carpenter, Secretary T.E.A., and J. W. Walker as secretaries. The matter being thus left in the hands of the Committee, the meeting broke up.
