AN EXPLANATION.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) Sib,—The statement that Mr Dean would give two prizes to the Waiotahi District schools (not the Waiotahi Creek school alone) was in good faith, on the authority of a gentlemen who conferred with Mr Dean on the subject, but as he contradicts the assertion, of course it must be accepted. Mr Dean's modesty is in keeping, with his actions, and they have not been few or niggard in the cause of education. No doubt exists as to the value and good to be attained by a competitive examination throughout the district, arid the scholars will probably not lose the, opportunity of obtaining a valuable prize as reward for their jexertions, although in the present instance the announcement appears to be ill-timed. Yours truly, E. Skeen.
