THE WEEK.

.■.JThe present hebdomadal record of mining, and matters akin thereto must, necessarily, be not only limited but fiat, since the week has been in all respects very quiet. Nowhere has the quietness been felt more -than in the-sharemarket, .a reaction,, h&vipg set in after the ephemera], ciccjljjlnent caused by Tairua prospects', '"WjH&out alsingle exception Tairua scrip ha^had a downward tendency during 'the week, and many have been heard to bemoan the miserable^ fate which led them to " hold on,'' when holding on was-«-as afterwards shown — extremely unadvisable. But everybody cannot win in ,tlfe. lottery of mining any, more than everyone can expect to be successful in the, greater lottery of life itself. Some turn up trumps, and some do not. The latter „ class (who, by the way, are Jn equipoise "should "console" themselves with'the philosophical apothegm of Jacob Faithful— " Better luck next time." The magnificent re suit; of the crushing of the Tairua prospectorj&ljirbne did not have the effect of causj&g" a^rM.'in the market,' simply because the return "Iw^fgwierally expected to be as good as it in reality turned out to be. • The company have dispatched the; small battery to the Tairaa Jiiver, from which it wilt be conveyed overland to the site of the ground, but it can scarcely be'expected that any material.result in the development of general mining in the district will be obtained until the end of the winter, and in the meantime it is most desirable that active steps should be taken by .the General Government (the local institution being, unhappily, bankrupt) to open up suitable moans of communication between tbe districts. There is a movement on foot to get up a 40 stamper mill at Tairua, which it is- sincerely hoped will result in something practical. During the week a piece, of unoccupied ground has been taken up on the Karaka Creek and christened the "Rocky Point," a second tribute Las also been taken up in the Inverness mine, from which the No. 1 tributers, Schofield and party, obtained such a splendid yield a few days back, and which will be found duly chronicled at the foot of this column with the other returns. There has been a marked improvement in the Queen of the May stuff, also in the Queen of Beauty, and the City of London has maintained an even show. The Golden Calf mine has attracted some attention of late, -owing to the improvement- in its prospects, the branch lode having widened out to an unexpected size, and showing gold freely. Crushing for the Company was commenced at the Kuranui battery early in the week, the show being very favorable to the present. The Cure shares have gone up considerably, and remain firm, anfl the general appearance"oftne mine warrants the assertion' that the scrip will continue to demand attention on 'Change, specimens coming to hand daily. Red Queens also appear frequently on the list of market quotations, owing to that mine being in possession of a reef -which the Cure manager is working towards the Eed Queen boundary with very promising results. Although, as stated in the introduction of the present article? there have nofc been any incident* calling for special notice in the matter of mining; still the progressive work has been considerable, and included in that progression must be mentioned the Pumping Association, which, while performing its useful work in draining the mines, js still sinking, and the bar of hard quartz country has been passed, for which, with his other mercies, Mr Box, the v contractor, is no doubt duly thankful. ;,.,., , „ : , ! The Bank of New/ Zealand have shipped during the week, 1,987? ounces' 0f:g0ld.:- ! ■;■';'* •:'■,■:"/ -,:'-'y:; '~ =
