WAIOTAHI ASSOCIATION.

Operations in the Waiotahi- Association's mine, under the direction of Mr ! Smith, manager, have' of late assumed more extensive proportions. The Manukau leader is being driven on from No. 2 shaft, and considerable progress has been macle, but the stuff has up.to tbe.presont proved of alow grade, arid the crushing from this source will not be so remunera-' tive as was expected. The stuff from > the small leaders in the old workings will however; help to make payable the general return, which will he to hand within two days. A parcel of sir tons from the lode discovered in the big tunnel has been crushed as a test. It did not give sati*factory results, but the lode,is considered to be worth prospecting nevertheless. At the point of intersection it was split by a sandstone hbrae. When the horse gives out, and the lode becomes more defined, there will be a greater chance of its containing gold. The usual indications of the golden matrix, such as the presence in a large degree of foreign metals, are not wanting, and the manager purposes giving the lode a legitimate trial. The three-feet reef, which'has> been neglected for some time, will be attacked again at the beginning of the month. When work was discontinued in this direction there had been many reasons for discouragement.- The reef varied much in size, (the title of the three-feet reef having stuck to it nevertheless), and finally narrowed to a mere vein; but the manager thinks that it will widen out, and with this view intends to follow it up.
