Monday. ' Mr Ormoiid has been re-elected for Hastings unopposed. ; ; '"' The heavy rains on Saturday, flooded the Meanec flats and the low-lying part of the town. Many sheep were drowned. A serious case of stabbing occurred on Saturday evening. James Cable, a.br.ic.kv layer, was'stabbed with a knife by John Thomas, a, cab:driver, who inflicted a; dangerous wound, 5 inches long, in the stomach. .He was .brought,, before the Resident Magistrate to-day, and remanded. Thomas .was being employed as overseer on the road, and was discharged by Cable, under whom he was working. The latter resented it. Cable may recover, but is not out of danger. A letter from Dr. Spencer on the cause of the late epidemic here points out that the immigrants per Clarence were landed here,;: in every stageVof disease and landed at the barracks. i The Council meets to-morrow after the adjournment of a week. .
