THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 1875.

The answer -of Earl ■ Carnarvon to tho petitions of Sir George Grey re the abolition of provinces and the land fund —tho famous manifestoes which were the primary means of Sir George being dragged from retirement — is. .such as might have been expected. It was sa;d indeed by all' but a few who .became sudden converts to Provincialism, that the subjects on which Sir ( George Grey prepared petitions, asking for the interference of the Imperial Parliament, were such as the General Assembly was competent" to deal with. A perusal of Earl Carnarvon's reply in- our telegraphic columns will convince the most sceptical —if any yet doubt—that the Secretary of State for the Colonies, who is almo&t as good an authority on Constitutional questions as Sir George Grey, holds the same opinion. There is not likely to bo any opposition from the Imperial Governlo tho intentions of the Now Zealand Legislature regarding an alteration of the Constitution.
