"At Uarborne, near Birmingham, on| Monday night, a young man named! Davis jinade a; desperate ; and r partially' BUCceasfiiFatteinpfc to" cut his sweetheart's throat, and then, committed suicide. It appears that Davis, who was engaged at Elliott's metal sheathing works, in thoi neighbourhood of Harborne, had been for| some . time past courting , Elizabeth: a "domestic servant" of 4ke' sariie village. The girl, howover, was either, indifi'erent or coquettish, and her conduct; was the occasion- of -frequont quarrels; between them. On one of these occasions; Davis, in a, fit of jealous frenzy, had; threatenedtto itate-hist sweetheart's life,l but the girl attached little significance to; the threat, and permitted his addresses as! usual. On Sunday afternoon there was; a fresh disagreement between them,! in consequence of Haynes refusing to allow h«f lover to join her at church, Davis left her in a passion. - On the following evening, shortly after 8 o'clock,; flae girl was sent out by her mistress on| an errand, when she'was met and accom-i panied by Davis. After executing her; commission, the girl was induced to walk; ■with; ter companion^through; arcpmpara■tiVely secluded "bywiy^ known as* 1 Moor^ Pool-lane, where Davis suddenly turned, upon her with a knife, and holding her; firmly against the wall, attempted to cut; her throat. Owing to the vigorous re-! siatance ©f the girl and the thickness of the muffler-round her thropt* the knife did; not penetrate very deeply, and after re-; ceiving a few gashes on the neck arid} hands she managedtoliberateherself, andj raise an alarm. Thereupon Davis turned; the knife upon himself, and before aid! could arrive cut his throat in a most ;de-: termined manner nearly from ear to ear.i Death must have been almost instan-j taneous. The . girl's wounds arei progressing favourably.—From the Times,; March 24. ~~ ?
