. i April 10th. i Yesterday morning an, extensile; fire occurred at the works of the Victoria Sugar Company, Sandridge. The water' supply being defective, the best part was pretty soon destroyed. The loss is estimated at between £20,600 and £40,009, of which £20,550 is covered by insurance. Nearly all the companies are concerned; New Zealand, £1500; and-National of lfew Zealand, £1000. ' Nearly 200 personsare thrown out of employment. It will be some months before operations can be resumed. The fire broke out of the' top :storey; of the sugarhouie. The origin of the fire is unknown, i 3,500 persons attended the Eev. Charles Clark's lecture on the "Tower of London, " in the Tower Hall. , It is estimated that upwards of B,ODO attended varioui places of amusement that evening. Breadstuff! 1--are very quiet. Wheat,' 4s lid to ss; Maurtius sugar has advanced from 10s to 15s; oats, 4s to 4s Id for mining.
