. : > ,-Saturday. The Provincial' Council has been" opened. Mr Ormond was re-elected Superintendent unopposed,. Mr Adeane Speaker, and Mr Fannin - Clerk. The Superintendent thanked tho Council for re-election, and accepted it on the understanding that lie should bo at liberty to resign before the' expiration of the term for which the Council was ro-clccted. Tie stated that, the receipts of" tho Pakipaki railway . per month was larger than those of any other Hue in the North Island ; that the progress of settlement at the Forty-rnilo Bush had been satisfactory, and that 2457 immigrants had.been introduced into the provinco during the past twelve months. He suggested that the cost of .education should be provided out of revenue as heretofore, to obviate the necessity of calling into operation certain clauses of the Act." The first block of land had bcen-taken,up on, deferred' payments by bopa fide settlers, and another block was about to be occupied. .Thejffjevenue estimated.to accrue during the year had not been fully realised. The ordinary revenue exceeded the estimate, but the territorial had fallen off. After providing for all expenditure, there will be a balance'in hand, or £)3,000.
