THE WEEK.
Nothing of great moment has occurred during the past week. The last of tke mnny cases—at present known —in connection with the Tairua leases were adr journed till a further date for hearing a few days since. Some will come on next week, and others the week after; thus ono subject of great interest to all of us was put off, and much of the discussion consequent thereon has fallen off, to bud again probably with greater vigor when the cases are brought prominently before the public.
It will be seen from the appended list that there have been some excellentreturns during the week, notably the Manukau, Cure, and Long Drive ; the- return from tho Tairua stone brought down by the Maori party has also turned out very satisfactorily, being equal to 2 ozs. 2 dwts. 2 grs. to the ton;. and a number of tributes have given good, returns. Tribute working is a great feature in Thames mining, and most, of the, tributers are doing very well. The "Waio-Karaka district still continues to. be prosperous, and a new discovery of considerable importance has been made in the Queen of Beauty mine, to which I referred during the week. As to the drainage question, nothing has yet been decided, the meeting at which it was proposed" to come to some definite arrangement having been postponed until to-day at one o'clock. Nothing further can be said here than was humbly set forward on last Saturday, with reference to the subject. Many interests are concerned, and it is desirable that all should act for the general good. The' Moanatairi Creek, at the present juncture, looks well. There is a ,continued improvement in the Albion mine, the Calf is : looking well, and the appearance of reefs at the low level of the Tookey> mine is rery good, being pregnant with those metals which indicate the probability of the presence of gold, although the show on the plates from the trial lot being put; through at the Prince Alfred battery is very poor. The United Pumping Association are once more on a firm footing,, and the 18-inch lift being now fixed in position everything is in readiness for a fresh start at sinking so soon as the engine has been repaired.}; ' i ? /:; '■ r' ' :- [The meeting re tho Waio-Karaka drainage did not come off to-day as arranged, owing to the continued absence of Messrs Graham and Weston.] :
