TWO AMERICAN GIANTESSES.
An Old Pioneer, now in England, send* to us (Ballarat Miner) through another Old Pioneer the following auto-biographies of young ladies he -has seen at home. We copy from a printed sheet issued by the showman:—" The life and adventures of the-giant liaters of America. readers,-—Two motives*induce me to give this brief sketch'of the life and adventures of my sister. and myself, the principal one being that I find it very difficult to giv« answers to the numerous questions which are put t»us by the great number of persons that daily come to see us. The other motive is, that in ! many instances those who come to see us will insist uponus receiving tome little gift from them. This we ,havd a great aversion to. Considering they pay the admission fee, it is uirjust-to accept-any thing from then; unjess I give them something equivalent to what tuey leave. I trust you will read, this patiently, an d in doing sO you will/find that I have not misrepresented our extraordinary proportions. We art natives of 1 a sma}l -vijiage cabled Brighton, near Boston,- in the St&fce of Masiaehusetts, I U.S., America. Our parents were poor, 1 hard-working people, and as things failed i with them they emigrated to Bo»ton; and i in tho course of a year, with- hard peri severance they, managed to get a good living. Our father was a stout built man, standing 6 feet 2 mche», and weighed 18 [stone, and he was considered, -the" finest 1 man in" jthe village. Qur mother, was a well-built 'woman', strong' aocl muscular ; and weighed about 12 stono. In facf, all our famfty were remarkable in stoutness. Our bpother^Joshua wa» the oldpst: ■ in his twentieth year he weighed 27 ; stono. Ho left home and went to England, and , is living at preient in Birmingham. Our sister Hose Ann was the nrxt oldest; she weighed 21 stone. • I was the next to Eose Ann, and when I was two -years old my, mother was persiiaded to. have me weighed.' 1' 1 Was & stone lilbs 6035, When I was in my tenth year 'I was 'so remarkably stout that the people came from all parts of the country to look at me, and we were constantly annoyed with people crowding round the door of the bourse. The shopmen. came, ancj. made golden ofie"rs' £01* me, but' my'"mother would- not trust nic with them! - Mr Barnum, a straightforward gentleman, har"ng ' heard of my great -sige, camo forward and gave good guarantees for my safety, so I was taken to his museum and exhibited at a dollar each. I.was also exhibited before the last three Presidents, at the White House in Washington. lam now in my twoniy-third year, and ap present my weight is 42 stqnc 111b. My 8' feet' roii'nd . stj'e shoulders, 7 feat round tha waist, and 37 mche9 r»und the arm. When I was at the age. of sixteen my father died; .and my mother not being able to support nine of us, three of the family obtained situations. I took my youngest sister witji me. We are 'bxnibitirig together, and ayeglad that 'we havo pleased the public so much. Hundreds throng to see is in
.every town where we are exhibiting. My sister Eliza will complete her sixteenth year on the 30th of August. She weighs 30 stone, and measures 7;feet round the waist, and 29 inches round the arm. She works hard, is proud of our family, and will readily answer any inquiries with cheerfulness. All visitors feel a pleasure ;in listening- to her story, and her frankness and prepossessing appearance has made her a favorite, wjth the public." *-■ ' ''"''■'"'
