DUNEDIN.

Tuesday,

Mr E. H. Leary has been returned as Councillor for Bell Ward by 35 majority. A great deal, of interest was centred m the result, as Mr Leary has. been one of ;the strongest opponents to- Princes-street widening. The new Treasurer made his -financial statement last evening. He speaks well. He stated that the Government had added £50,000 for the sale of Crown lands, and have • increased the amounts derived from educational reserv.o £500, arid school fees £1,000." This makes the total, addition to estimated revenuo of £51,500, bringing the total estimated receipts up to £616,826. The estimated expenditure will be found to road £727,923, showing a decrease on the total expenditure pro-

posal by the late Government of £13,65^Notwithstanding this decrease, thoy propose to spend more than the late Gevernmcnt on roads and bridges. He explained that £2,500 has been omitted for school buildings.' It is generally considered the Government; will have to retire from office as an adverse vote will be carried by a majority of two. The University was formally opened last night. Dr Coughtrey, Professor of Anatomy, delivered the inaugural address.

This day. Mr Reid's want of confidence motion in Mr Bastings' Executive was carried at two o'clock this morning by fivo of a majority. ,'• - - :
