V ; Tuesday.: The extension of the Southern railway from Ashburton to.Rangitata, a distance of 20 miles, was opened yesterday. This makes a total of ,70 miles opened from Christchurch, southward. \
The New Zealand Shipping Company have received advices to-day from London that contracts have beon made for the immediate building of five new iron ships of the highest clasa at Lloyds, and of extra strength. The ships are each to be 1,000 tons register, and will be named as follows: —The Hurunui, Waipawa, Wairoa, Orari, /and Otaki. They will arrive in the colony in lime for the next wool season. ,
