SHORTLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.
PRESENTATION TO EX-SUPER
INTENDENT BULL,
The usual weekly practice of the members of the above brigade was held last night. The Superintendent, J. E. Macdonald, the Captain, and a majority of the members being present. After the usual business of the brigade was transacted and several gentlemen proposed as members, the Superintendent said he was pleased to see such a good attendance, as he had another matter to lay before them. It was a very pleasing duty he had to perform, and one he hoped that would give equal pleasure to Mr Bull. All present were aware that some months ago Mr Bull found it necessary to resign the office of Superintendent, which he had so ably filled, reflecting both credit on the brigade and upon himself. At that time a vote of thanks to Mr BulHhad \. been passed by the Brigade, and the Mayor and Councillors had passed another resolution, acknowledging the valuable lervices of: Mr Bull while Superintendent of the Shortland Brigade. These two resolutions it was decided should Be put on paper, and he hoped all would agree that they were handsome, and had been creditably executed by Mr Slator. The testimonials, each in a rosewood frame, with gold beading, and most beautifully illuminated, in the artist's best style, were then read : — ■:-'- "Thames, N, Z., May 1875. " To Me John Bull,—We, the Mayor, Councillors an,d burgesses of the Borough of Thames tender the thanks of the Corporation to Mr John Bull, for his able and valuable services while Superintendent of the Shortland Volunteer Fire Brigade. - (Seal) " W. Dayies Mayor." "Thames, N.Z., Jan. 1875.; " To Me John Bum.—We, the officers and firemen of the Shortland Volunteer Fire Brigade, beg to record our high sense of the energy and ability displayed by you while -in command of the Brigade; and to express our great^ regret at your being under the necessity of resigning your office. " Signed on behalf of the Brigade, " J. JE. Macdonald, Superintendent, " Wm. McCullough:, Captain, "J. Haetley,Fireman. 5' After reading the testimonials, Mr Macdonald remarked that there was no necessity to refer to the feelings entertained by the Brigade for Mr Bull; for himself, he would say that he never felt go comfortable as when Mr Bull was his chief, but he was sure while Mr Bull was on the -field that his best services might be depended upon, consistent with ! his other duties. He had, in conclusion, great pleasure in presenting, on behalf of the Brigade and the Mayor and Councillors, the testimonials.
' Mr Bull, in replying, alluded to the pleasure he had ever expressed while Superintendent of the Brigade, and to the admirable terms that existed between officers and men. He valued highly the testimonials, and as far as his other duties would allow, he would be only too haPPy to assist the Brigade at all times. Three cheers were given for Mr Bull, after which the Superintendent invited the men to do honor to the occasion in the usual manner by adjourning to the Exchange Hotel.
