Provincial Council.
In the Provincial Council last night the remaining items on the Estimates were passed without alteration, except the item of Inspector of Weights and Measures, £160, vwhich was postponed; and Inspection of Sheep, £500, which was reduced by £62 10s—the Provincial, Treasurer remarking, with respect to the latter item, that there was too much inspection, and an attempt will be made to bring about a reorganisation. The Committee divided, on the proposal by Mr Swanson to postpone the item of £1000 for an annuity to Mrs Williamson, and the amendment was negatived on a division—l 4to 11—and the item agreed to.
A debate ensued on the second reading of the Public Buildings Bill, and some fresh proposals were submitted by Mr Wood on the subject. The debate was adjourned until Thursday. When in Committee qn the Estimates, the Council decided" that,-the offices of Provincial Treasurer and Provincial Secretary should be amalgamated, and the salary for both fixed at £300. The item of legal expenses was increased by £100; asjit was not intended to appoint a Provincial Solicitor.
The adjourned debate on Mr Kees' motion for an income tax to meet educational, requirements" was resumed. After some discussion, the motion was negatived,- and an amendment carried on the motion of Mr Carleton, to the effect that direct taxation as distinguished from rates ought to be equally distributed over all parts cf the Colony. The Provincial Treasurer expects that the business of the Council will be concluded on Friday.
In the Police Court, George Smith was sent to gaol for three months far stealing a tub full of clothes, the property of Thomas Cotter.
The* Manaia had a fearful passage from the Thames, and anchored in Waihike channel, having suffered considerable damage to the blades and wheel. She made various attempts to proceed, but was compelled to anchor four times. Arrived here at 12.30.
