CITY OF LONDON.

Mr Thomas Hicks, manager of the above company's mine, is working on a scale of practical energy that places the mine in a f&ir position as to prospects, much depending always, a3 it is needless to say, upwi the manner of conducting operations. The stbpes excavated as the cross-leader is followed are being filled in as the work proceeds and necessity demands. The leader is of good sise, and still maintains its character, so that the prospects of the company, who still employ 40 head of stamps at the Kuranui Battery, maintain an even tenor that is very encouraging. The contractors have made good headway in the drive towards the City of York boundary, beinjr within nearly 20 feet of the point of their contract. On the upper ltevel, the manager has sunk a winze—at present down 40 feet. The air in this quarter, which is indifferent, necessitates the constant .use, of a fan, but ventilation may be expected; to be attained when the drive is put in at the bottom level, which •will form a connection through the medium of this winze with the upper workings. The main shaft is still being sunk, being down' at the present time a little over 50 feet below the bottom level worked. This shaft, as will probably be known to most who take an interest in the'mihingrecordsjjis situated on the boundary line which divides the : City of London from the Queen of the May mine, and from which the latter company work the different levels.
