THE POPE AND PROTESTANTS IN ROME.
The Pope, who on February ,4th, for! the first time.since the Italian occupation, appeared, oiitsicfp the Yatipan, paying a." visit to, th,e Basilipa pf St Peter, has'adxessed a letter to. the Lent preachers. After remarking that, like St. Peter, he might say, " Salutat tos eeclesia quse est in Babylone," he proceeds:'." We do not indeed see in Borne the temples which St. Peter found; there consecrated to idols, but idols are not wanting against which we ought to fight. There is no temple dedicated to Jupiter, but there is the Jupiter of scepticism and unbelief which with his thunderbolts would burn to ashes the sqin'e divinity • and as he has despoiled the Church of Jesus Christ of everything, he would'make it disappear from the face of the earth. There is no temple dedicated, to Mercury, but who can'sa^f ho,vy frightfully thieves, h}s worshippers, . have multiplied.? "There is "no temple in honor of Venus, but there are hundreds and hundreds of houses where many souls incur eternal damnation. But this is not all. There .- are Protestant phiftfeftesi whigh, if they can bp deemed less dangerous, yet form a ground for great sbF' roTV. In Eome, predestined by God as the papital of the great Catholic family.; in Eome, made preoious by the blood of martyrs ; in Eome, justly decorated with the title of Mistress of the Truth, I cannot but feel grieved at seeing within the very walls where rise the majestic temples of "the Christian religion halls and congregations start up by ? their side,
where they pretend to worship God by heresy, which is a rebellion against Him. What ought, moreover, to excite your zeal as shepherds of souls [ is the opening of certain schools where, generally speaking, impiety is dominant and efforts are made by all means to corrupt childhood and youth." The Pope then urges the clergy and laity 'to resist the teachers of error; and.to- snatch from their hands lambs that are in danger of becoming wolves. >
