Provincial Council.

In the Provincial Council last night Mr Dargaville moved, " That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that a duty of £5 per ton be levied on all kauri gum exported irom the Colony, and that the revenue derived therefrom be declared land revenue, and applicable exclusively to purposes of education. That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to His Honor the Superintendent, asking him to forward same to the General Government, with a request that legal effect, be given thereto." A lengthy debate ensued, during which Mr Lusk proposed, as an amendment, " That the subject be referred to a Select Committee.". : Ultimately the Council divided and the original resolution was carried by a majority of 18 to 16. The Grammar School Reserve Sale Bill and Hospital Reserve Sale Bills were read a second time, and passed through remaining stages without opposition. Mr Reader "Wood moved the second reading of the Public Buildings - Act Repeal Bill.—Debate was then adjourned until next sitting day.
