In the CounciHast night, iritlae debateon the financial statement, Mr Reed defended the charge that the Estimates of last session were bogus.. .He .showed, that with the exception of the land revenue which had failed through the wilful obstructiveness of the General Government, all the, Fstimates.had,been fairly realised.

The consideration of a message from the Superintendent, with reference to a claim of MrLusk for.the, refund- pf £41 damages and costs in''the- action "brought against him in regard ,_tp . transactions which? occurred when he-was -the' PrbvinSecretary, was, on the motion of Mr .Macreadyj adjourned" .'until % Thursday next.' On the motion of Mr.Cheeseman it was agreed that a return should be asked for money paid for provincial law expenses during'the last 12 months; and to whom; also a "return to show all, if any, law charges forwarded to the Provincial Government but not yet paid. On the motion ;bf Mr -Davies it was resolved that a bill should be introduce^ p for the formation, management, and cO"-' trol of public cemeteries at the Thames. Along debate ensued on the resolution of Mr Dargavillei affirming the desirability of maintaining existing relations between Provincial-and General Goernments with reference to the police. The resolution was carried on a division by 18 to 12. On the motion of Mr Prime, the Superintendent was requested to place £5,0 .on the. Estimates' for the Auckland Mechanics' Institute, and a similar amount for Technical Clas.ses. connected therewith/ '■'.'■■ \ '■■■•-*•■■■ . ./ / ■ >
■■'- Mr.Carpenter, moved that the Council consider it of vital importance to the Province ' that an investigation should be into the causes which operate to deprive it of an equit.able share of the Land Fund of the colony, and that W committee be appointed to take evidence and\jreport thereon, .the committee #d consist"' of iMessfs Wood, Cheesemah,; Lusk, Shepherd,-'Swanson, Bees,'and the mover. Motion agreed
On the motion of Mr Carpenter, the action^ of the) General Government in endeavouring to constitute the advance of £50,000 for the Tumping Association" a charge upon the Province was considered extremely reprehensible, and a Committee was appointed to take evidence upon the matter.
