THAMES BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Thames Borough Council was 1 held last night; present—Cr Eenshaw presiding in the absence of His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Eowe, Anthony, Brown, Wilson, Butt, and McNab.
MINUTES. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. BEIGHT SMILE ChM.CO. A letter was received from Mr Benny, manager of the above mine, enclosing plans and specifications for, a flume intended to be erected across^ Bella-street,] arid asking permission of the QounciV for such erection. The flume is intended to carry water from the old battery to the new one. '" Cr Brown proposed that the application be received, and the necessary proceedings according to th,e Act be taken. Carried. COBEESPONDENCE.
A letter was received from several residents in Upper Albert street praying that the road should be imprpved. Mr Dean pointed out that a s«m of money had been voted at the last meeting of the Council for improvement v of Upper Albert street, but one of the residents had objected to. the proposed extension, and in the opinion of the Warden the objection would hold good. The road asked for by the petitioners was a branch road. Matter referred to the Works Committee. . '
From Mr Thompson referring to the Council table) the patent leather of which !at the Chairman's end was torn, and suggesting, that cloth should be used. Cr Brown insinuated that the iCOTer could not be expected to stand, when the excitable nature of the occupants of that end of the table was considered. Mr Dean said the leather burst from the shrinking of the boards of the table, not from the hard blows it received. j The matter was left in Mr Dean's hands to deal with. , ■ . . ... ■ ■', Frdm the contractor for Upper Albertstreet asking that the traffic be stopped while the road was being metalled. j The Council declined to interfere. From Mr Puckey stating that fire signatures out of six had been obtained to the grant of the land for the cemetery at Tararu, and recommending that Mr Wilkinson should be (despatched to Whangarei to obtain the remaining signature of the native owner who lives there. It was decided not to entertain the matter at present. ' - - From' the Superintendent's Office referring to Government grant, and the deduction made for maintaining in repair the Tararu road.
Cr Brown stated that His Worship the the Mayor-intended to inquire into the matter in Auckland.
Cr Henshaw said the Gorernment promised to keep the road in order up to the Ist of last January, 'and when afc that -date asked* to still continue to do so had offered no objection., Another letter stated that there were no funds to grant for" an Hospital for infectious disease! applied for by the Council. From E. Thompson, complaining that the footpath at the corner of Albert and Pollen..street opposite his property, was mucli damaged by the construction of the tramway, which was on a line with the road. v Referred to Works Committee. PUBLIC HEALTH ACT. i Mr Mason sent in his report, in which he called attention to several matters requiring the supervision of the Works Committee. WOBKS COMMITTEE. < The report of the Foreman of Works stated that several works had been carried out, and stating the costs of each. The state of the Tararu Cemetery was referred to, and, from the report, it certainly required attention,, as a, number of pigs were allowed to root about the newly made graves. The state of the WaieJTaraka road was referred to, which required attention at once. Cr Anthony proposed that 50 yards of metal should Be at once put on the rdady which was agreed to.- -,;. ' The attention of Mr Maion was ordered to be directed to the state of the Tararu Cemetery.: ■■■■■<■!■■■ r.■■.;■■:-, L •;;;; . Cr Anthony suggested: that Mr Mason be presented with a gun, and be; allowed to shoot the pigs. ■ ; ?:~,? >5 The Collector reported iha,t £295 7s 2d of rates had been collected during the fortnight. - FIBE BBIQ-ApE bbiIMITTEE. \ The report of the Fire Brigade Committee stated that, several;matters required attention. , . , ■" Pr Butt moved that the recommenda*, tions be earned out, jand the accounts foi expenditure paid.; • ' .'■ J. 4. •" ■>'.. Cc McNab was re-elected as a member of the Works Committee.
Cr Howe stated that he had signed the deeds conveying the land to the present J occupants of the houses adjoining the Karika Creek, the deeds stipulating that the proposed alteration in the btd of the creek should be allowed to be carried o«t. ■ -; r _. ,'•; Cr Butt drew, attention to the reckless way in which cattle were driven through the public streets, and suggesting that some bye-law should be enacted to prevent cattle from being driven at all hours through the town. He concluded by giving -notice that, he would move a bye-law to prevent such practices at the next meeting. This concluded the business.
