Mr .TV W. Maude, secretary far public works in the late Government, has resigned his seat in the Provincial Council.
The greater portion of the birds imported per Tintern Abbey and offered for sale by the Acclimatization Society are already bought un and liberated in various parts of the Province. j%
The Press this morning contains the following :—After his conviction, Mercer wrote a great deal, including a second letter to his wife, who;resides at Emerald Hill, Melbourne, in which he states he has no hope, but is innocent.; -He speaks in the most affectionate manner of his little daughter Helen,' and begs his wife not to let his "poor dear old. mother " hear of his end—-as, if she knows, it will break her heart; and he also wishes it to be kept a secret from his brothers and sisters. He also wrote to some friends in Melbourne, begging them to interest themselves on behalf of his wife, and giving directions as to the disposition of his property, His handwriting and spelling were fair, showing no lack of education.
